Do I need planning permission for a patio?
In England, a ground-level patio in the back garden of a house does not usually need planning permission. A raised patio, decking or platform more than 30cm above the ground needs permission, and a patio in a front garden follows the same permeable-surfacing rule as driveways. Different rules apply to flats and maisonettes, listed buildings, and some protected areas, so check with your local planning authority before starting work.
